Weekly Chapter 3/3
“Jumi!”
When Gwangmyeong turned around, a sudden flash of light appeared. The blood streaming down his forehead was so vivid that Jumi froze, unable even to scream. Then her mouth closed. She felt a blow to her neck. Before she could resist, her eyes shut.
Her eyelids felt heavy, as if made of lead. She tried to lift her head, but her entire body felt weighed down, as though her mind were submerged in water.
“Ah…”
She rested her forehead on the passenger seat.
…
…
After some time, her eyes opened again. The surroundings had grown brighter. Beside her was a man with his eyes closed. At first, she couldn’t recognize who he was.
His face was drenched in blood. His nose appeared broken, twisted out of shape.
“Gwangmyeong!”
As Jumi tried to get up, she noticed her wrists were tied behind her back. Moreover, her pregnancy shifted her center of gravity, making her lean backward. She crawled on her knees and lifted Gwangmyeong’s cheek.
“Are you alive? Gwangmyeong. Open your eyes…”
Jumi shook the man, unsure if he was even alive.
The place reeked of the foul stench of blood.
She wondered what she should do.
“Jumi.”
He uttered her name without opening his eyes.
“Gwangmyeong.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yes. Don’t speak if it’s hard for you.”
“Please stretch out your hand.”
In his bound hands was a nail. Despite Gwangmyeong’s skills, she doubted he could break the restraints with just a nail.
“I’ll untie you, but when those bastards come in, pretend you’re still tied.”
“Gwangmyeong, I need to untie you first.”
“Can you untie me with your hands bound?”
“You’re right.”
Every time his bloodied hand brushed against hers, a wave of fear washed over her. Yet, crying wouldn’t solve anything. Yoongyo wasn’t with her; she only had Gwangmyeong. They were in a strange place, with no one to call for help.
When people are pushed to the edge of a cliff, they often grow calmer—perhaps that’s why her tears didn’t fall. Anxiety dominated her thoughts.
“I hope my children are safe.”
She didn’t care what might happen to her, but she couldn’t just sit idle. Besides, she was carrying a baby in her womb, so she had to protect herself.
“Everything will be fine because there are always people stationed near the house.”
Gwangmyeong wanted to reassure her. Though she felt somewhat calmer by his side, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something truly dangerous might happen.
