Weekly Chapter 2/4
“If you intended to kill me, you should have strangled me that night…”
The smile disappeared from his face, sadness took over.
He stared at the closed palanquin window.
“I wanted you to ride in the best palanquin. Not this crappy thing…”
He was relieved because Eunha was within his reach.
He had to admit that fact made him feel very relieved. Eunha’s existence reassured him. Perhaps the anger that erupted when he saw her was his longing. That was why he wasn’t glad that she was safe, he was upset that she had abandoned him.
But he didn’t know why.
The sun set rapidly, and faint stars started to emerge in the sky.
“I hope that one day soon, you won’t call me Jihak.”
Eunha, sitting on the palanquin, hugged her knees tightly.
Tears streamed down her face.
“How could there ever be a day when I don’t call you Jihak…?”
“I can give up everything to live with you.”
“……”
“I had always been content with my role as Grand Prince, but meeting you made me feel otherwise.”
As she heard his voice, her vision became blurry and her hearing faded, reminiscent of the disorientation she experienced during a high fever.
“I was furious because you betrayed me. And seeing how you lived after choosing to leave me…”
His voice trembled. She noticed that he was looking at the sky sadly. Eunha covered her mouth to hold back the sobs that were about to burst.
“I think I loved you too much. I’m a fool, I thought you loved me too.”
But soon hot tears wet her cheeks.
Her memories of him flashed through her mind, tearing at her heart. Regret surged like a torrent, leaving her breathless.
“Jihak. I…”
She could not properly articulate her words.
She felt a chill run through her veins as she realized she could no longer conceal it.
“If I had remained in Harye, I wouldn’t have been able to protect him…”
“Your sister? Did you think I would take your sister’s life?”
She shook her head. Jihak hadn’t noticed.
“I had to protect my baby. No, our baby.”
She buried her face between her knees. Her face turned red. Her body tremble convulsively as she held back her screams that wanted to escape.
Eunha, unaware that the palanquin door was open, suddenly noticed the scent of opium-laced tobacco mixing with the stagnant air.
When she lifted her tear-soaked face, she saw him enter the palanquin. Now they were face to face. Her hands trembled.
“Again…”
His hand caressed her wet cheek.
“I’m expecting a baby.”
His unfocused eyes trembled.
