Weekly Chapter 4/4
“Where is the attendant?”
Jihak wiped away the water that had splashed Eunha’s cheek, then picked up the cloth nearby. Eunha stared at his face, still feeling like she was in a dream.
The Great Prince pulled her to her feet. He examined her small scars as he dried her. The marks, which had been caused because she had come a long way, moved him. He also stroked her water-wrinkled fingers. When he raised his head, Eunha’s cheeks turned red because their eyes met.
Although they had shared their body heat several times, she was so embarrassed that she looked like she was going to cry. She didn’t know what to do to cover her private parts.
The bathroom was softly lit. The brazier created a warm atmosphere.
She didn’t want her fever to rise again because it would be a big problem.
Eunha’s body leaned towards him. But Jihak didn’t hug her, he simply held her slender shoulders. He exhaled softly.
—No op*um. It’s dangerous for both the baby and the woman. Why don’t you show the Western doctors your eyes? They might know what the disease is.
He ignited his pipe, feeling utterly despondent. His pain slowly began to subside. Yuljae, who had been watching, snatched the pipe from him.
—Do you know what happened to those who smoked op*um in the palace?
—I know. They endured intense mania until they took their own lives.
—Op*um destroys even strong men. You can’t use it anymore.
He was right. But his body never had a good smell. It always smelled like death. The others were terrified just looking at him. He had decapitated others to ensure his own survival.
“Jihak.”
He was lost in thought when he heard a soft voice call out to him. Jihak gently picked up Eunha and set her down outside the bathtub. Once he secured the knot of her robe firmly, he brushed away the hair that was tangled around her neck.
“Don’t leave my quarters until you feel better.”
She nodded. Water dripped from her chin.
She smelled like flowers. He remembered her scent vividly. Though his anger had faded, each time their eyes met, it felt like his chest was on fire.
“I’ll call the attendant.”
Jihak then turned to leave. He had come here to check on Eunha’s condition. He wanted to ask her several questions, but he didn’t.
When she was unconscious, he felt he should not wake her. He is harmful to her. Every time she saw him, she would burst into tears and her heart would pound. Additionally, the smell of op*um had seeped into his skin.
“Wait.”
Jihak turned his head toward her.
She had only recently emerged from the bathtub, her cheeks flushed like a peach.
“Why?”
He frowned.
“What?”
“Why did you give me that room in your quarters?”
“Do you hate that place?”
“Huh?”
“If this doesn’t suit you, I can find you a different place.”
Eunha lowered her head.
“I’m curious, what will happen to the baby?”
Jihak turned in Eunha’s direction. She was momentarily speechless. She placed her hand on her lower abdomen.
“This child will be considered illegitimate. It’s my fault. In that case…!”
“Stop!”
