Weekly Chapter 1/3
Precious silks she had never seen before in her life. Eunha examined the array of items the fabric store owner had laid out. Then she looked at Heein’s face.
“These fabrics are too fancy for me.”
Heein put down her teacup.
“You’re the Greatr Prince’s woman now, right? That’s why you must wear proper clothes. How can you keep living like this?”
“You know my background is humble. I haven’t learned etiquette either. Even if I wore silk, who would see me as valuable?”
“You’re stubborn.”
“I’m sorry.”
Eunha lowered her head. Heein, who personally checked the silks, chose some that had light embroidery. They were all colors that resembled spring.
“Turn this into women’s clothes.”
“Yes.”
“Where are the jewels?”
“Here…”
Again, Eunha left all the choices to Heein.
The accessories were different from what she had seen in the courtesan’s house, even though courtesans preferred flashy things. They looked more elegant.
Heein showed some accessories to Eunha.
“Do you think it’s too elegant?”
Eunha shook her head.
“No, it’s nice.”
“Do you think His Excellency will like it too?”
“Huh?”
“I’m sure whatever you choose he’ll like.”
When she saw Eunha’s ears turn red, Heein changed the subject.
“How long will it take to make the clothes?”
“We already know Eunha’s measurements, so it won’t take long.”
“All right. I’ll pay for everything.”
“Yes.”
As the fabric store owner stood up, the salesman followed suit. They could not hide their joy. They bowed politely, then left the place.
It was rare for someone to treat her as a superior. Finally, Eunha relaxed her body.
A day had passed since she had stayed at Heein’s house. The attendants were kind, but strangely she did not feel well.
Her morning sickness returned, her solar plexus was hot.
It seemed the baby knew his father because she never felt morning sickness around him.
“I heard you like to read. The Great Prince said so.”
Eunha shook off her anxiety and lifted her head.
“I love learning. When I stayed in the coastal town for a while, I earned money by making books. I also enjoy writing.”
“It’s strange. There was a time when my brother liked writing more than hunting. You also know the Western language, right?”
“Yes, but I’m embarrassed.”
Heein sighed. If she had been born into a good family, wouldn’t she have become a rather useful official, fit to be with her brother?
She laughed. Now she thought she knew why Jihak was in love with this girl. At first he might have liked her beautiful face, but there were probably other reasons.
“Mother.”
Heein greeted the child with a kind face.
“Did you like the walk?”
“Yes, come back after drawing the cherry blossoms I saw.”
“That sounds like it was enjoyable. Now, go get some rest.”
“Yes.”
It looked to Eunha like the boy was about 10 years old.
“His name is Zen, my son. He’s frail, so I can’t send him to private school. He spends his time drawing instead.”
“Why is he frail?”
“He had a lung disease and now suffers from asthma.”
Now Eunha understood why he seemed smaller. Suddenly, the words she heard from Priest Christopher came to her mind. He had told her that Western medicine was more effective for people with chronic diseases.
She questioned whether Western doctors could cure Zen’s chronic lung disease. Could they also treat Jihak’s illness?
