Weekly Chapter 2/4
There is no one here.
Probably not everyone had finished their work, because she was alone in the stream. She laid her clothes on a stone, then stepped into the stream with a soap.
Priest Christopher had recommended that Yongi use a particular soap for bathing to help protect her from infectious diseases.
She got goosebumps because the water was cold. Yongi washed as the priest had taught her. However, the fishy odor lingering on her body was stubborn and difficult to remove.
There was a time when she performed to keep the men satisfied. She smiled beautifully like a doll adorned with gold, but she was fed up.
Other tasks like writing poetry were not easy either. Without Eunha’s assistance, she wouldn’t have risen to become the flower of the courtesan house.
After exiting the stream, Yongi dried herself. After washing her fishy-smelling clothes, she put them on while they were still wet.
The clothes would likely dry when she returned home.
This was how an ordinary person lived.
When Yongi got home, she felt overheated and her mouth was dry. This had happened to her before, but she chose to ignore it.
She took the letter from Eunha that had arrived today, then opened the gate to enter the yard. The cat that was in a small garden left.
Yongi wondered if it was due to having been in cold water or working on a hot day. Believing she was hallucinating, she ignored the person sitting on the ground.
What could possibly bring the warrior Yuljae here? And all by himself, no less.
Where was Eunha?
“I guess I really do have a fever…”
Yongi pressed her hand against her hot forehead. Then the man, who was looking at her, stood up. He approached her.
“You’ll catch a cold wearing those wet clothes.”
Startled, Yongi blinked in disbelief.
“It’s been some time.”
“This can’t be real.”
Her eyes twitched as she murmured softly.
Yuljae wrung out Yongi’s damp hair. Then he placed his large hand on her forehead.
“Warrior…”
“You have a fever.”
Yongi bit her trembling lip.
When she realized it wasn’t a hallucination, she felt embarrassed. Her heart racing, Yongi hurried inside the house, as if trying to escape.
“Come back. I need to rest.”
But Yuljae answered from outside.
“I’ve traveled quite a distance. I’d appreciate it if you could provide me with a room.”
“There is an inn near the quayside. My house is too small.”
Yongi crawled as far away from the door as possible.
Yuljae, who leaned against the wall, bent one knee.
“I risked my life to get here, and your behavior is quite rude.”
“Hmm…”
“Where were you all night?”
It seemed he had arrived when she was at work. Yongi felt uneasy thinking about him standing outside the gate in the morning dew. But she soon calmed down.
“I need to earn a living.”
“It seems like the money was squandered.”
“All that money is in the earthenware. Take it. It feels like I betrayed my sister.”
Yongi was resolute. She felt she had wronged Eunha by leaving the courtesan house. Her sister never spoke of her troubles, likely striking a deal with Jihak to save her.
