Weekly Chapter 2/3
Each time he swung his sword, another head fell to the ground.
The monsters had faces of people he knew.
Among them were not only his adversaries like the Defense Ministers, but also allies such as the Crown Prince.
They gazed at him with eyes full of resentment, and Jihak tightened his grip on his sword.
The monsters charged at him.
“Give us your life!”
“How did you manage to survive alone?”
“We’ll take everything you hold dear.”
Eunha…
His eyes turned red. He held on to the idea of rescuing Eunha.
But where was she? And what lay at the end of this darkness was unknown to him.
Resentment took a tangible form and gripped his neck. He felt a suffocating pressure. With all his strength, Jihak called out Eunha’s name.
“Husband! Husband!”
Jihak’s eyes opened as a hand shook him awake. From darkness to light. The faint scent of lilies filled his nostrils. The cries that had disturbed him faded away.
The Great Prince looked at Eunha with trembling eyes.
It had all been a dream.
“What did you dream about?”
Her eyes were full of concern.
Jihak, rising to his feet, took Eunha’s hand.
Her warmth chased away the demons from his dream.
“I needed to find you, but I was surrounded by enemies.”
He embraced her with a smile. Her pregnant belly pressed against him.
“I think it’s best if you rest today.”
Jihak gently kissed her forehead.
“Will you stay with me?”
“I have some tasks to attend to.”
“I’m worried because in my dream it felt like someone had taken you away from me.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll stay by your side.”
Jihak chuckled, finding her reaction endearing. It felt as though the pain he experienced in the dream had vanished, as if his mind had erased all traces of it.
The pale light of dawn streamed into the house.
Jihak kissed her lips, tasting the faint flavor of lilies.
Hadn’t they always said that dreams were the opposite of reality?
A dream was just a dream.
They gazed at each other. Jihak gently caressed her belly. The baby kicked inside her.
Eunha looked down with a smile.
“The baby is strong. His kicks hurt me.”
“Tsk, the baby should come out soon so you can feel better.”
“I know.”
The shadow of the large ginkgo tree fell across the window. In a season, the baby would be born. When spring arrived, they would return to his original home.
Jihak lay down on the mat with her. As they intertwined their fingers, their rapid heartbeats slowed. A warm energy enveloped them.
“I will never leave. I don’t like you having those dreams.”
“I will never lose you. I will protect you no matter what, Eunha.”
Soon he would have to protect his child as well. He knew the road ahead would be difficult, but he was ready to face it, no matter what. The shadows of the past might try to overtake them, but he would not let them destroy the future he wanted to build.
This promise would be tested sooner than they expected.
