Weekly Chapter 3/3
Jihak, who had dozed off while holding Eunha, slowly opened his eyes. His day started later than usual, but he still had breakfast with Eunha.
“Even if you’re late, no one can say anything.”
“I made a promise.”
“You’ve always been good at keeping your promises, right?”
Eunha’s cheeks flushed at his teasing. She never managed to keep her promise not to faint, especially now that she was pregnant and more fragile.
Jihak, knowing the reason, still couldn’t help but be playful.
“Answer me.”
As he leaned closer, Eunha called out to Gari to prepare the clothes.
“Stay home. I’ll be there soon. The doctor mentioned he had some news about your eyesight. I need to hear what he has to say.”
“I don’t think that’s necessary.”
“He knows how much your vision has improved.”
Once Eunha moved to another room, Jihak summoned the new attendant for a sangtu. Heein brought Jeong, who had gentle hands. She had served in the royal palace before and handled tasks with ease.
The Great Prince selected the sangtu with dragon embroidery.
“I am Yuljae.”
As Jihak gazed at his reflection, he heard the warrior’s voice from outside.
“Come in.”
Then Jeong left. They still hadn’t captured Seogyeong, and enemies were still at large. Jihak felt uneasy, needing to protect Eunha.
“Why have you come?”
Yuljae produced a letter, his expression serious.
The letter was folded four times, tied with golden thread. Seeing the carved tiger at the end of the string, Jihak’s eyes narrowed.
“This letter is from the capital.”
“I thought so.”
“Open it, please.”
Jihak unfolded the letter, but it was blank. His expression grew colder. Yuljae brought an oil lamp closer, and Jihak moved the paper nearer to the flame.
“It’s a secret message.”
Gradually, faint letters started to appear on the paper.
Secret letters like these were used during the war.
The Great Prince read the emerging words with pursed lips.
Yuljae tried to mask his anxiety.
“My Lord.”
“The Crown Prince has disappeared?”
Jihak rubbed his temples slowly, finding it hard to believe.
The frail Crown Prince had run away from home? The letter stated he had left the palace quietly, accompanied by a single warrior.
His trail reached as far as the road to Harye.
The reason behind the Crown Prince’s departure was unclear, but something significant must have happened.
“What do you think?” Jihak asked.
“We need to find out,” Yuljae replied.
“When did the letter arrive?”
“Early this morning.”
It was unusual. Jihak shook his head.
After instructing Yuljae to burn the letter, he donned a blue robe.
He decided to take Eunha to Hwall today, feeling an unsettling tension in the air that he couldn’t ignore.
A commotion was imminent. He had to keep Eunha safe, no matter the cost. With a steely resolve, he vowed to protect her from the impending storm, even if it meant facing his darkest fears and adversaries head-on.
