Weekly Chapter 1/3
“How long have you been here?”
She moved to draw the curtain aside, but he caught her wrist before she could. Water dripped from her sheer, damp sleeves.
“Why are you smiling?”
“I’m happy to see you.”
“Me too.”
Jihak lifted her into his arms. Her lips parted slightly, and through her soaked petticoat, the outline of her undergarments was visible.
He hadn’t expected a woman carrying a child to be so captivating. Concerned she might catch a chill, he held her closer.
“I’m heavy.”
“To me, my pregnant wife could never be heavy.”
“But I’m also wet.”
“It’s fine.”
Eunha shook her head but chose not to argue. Though slightly embarrassed, she found comfort in Jihak’s embrace.
It was the warmest hug she had ever known. She had grown familiar with the tenderness of his chest.
When the attendants saw Jihak carrying Eunha, they hurried to light the fireplace. Jihak then instructed them to stay away from his chambers.
He carried Eunha inside, where the room was still cold. Soon, her lips began to turn blue.
She smelled sweet.
He gently tugged at her shirt, letting it slip off her shoulders. Lowering his lips to her slender neck, he brushed against the fine hairs that stood on end.
“Why did you want to visit my sister so late?”
She leaned into him as his warm hand rested on her rounded belly.
“You already know since you stopped us…”
He held her soft bre@sts in his hands.
“I want to hear it from you. What happened while I was away? What was all the commotion about? And how many times did the baby kick today?”
Her cold skin began to warm.
“After you left, I gave books to the children. I was surprised to find one of them aspired to be a reader. I was packing soap when my sister arrived.”
He carefully laid her on the bed and covered her with a blanket. She tilted her head back toward where he lay.
“My sister found an aristocrat in the mountains who had been bitten by a snake…”
“That’s why you wanted her help.”
“Yes. But why are you here? Did you see Gari?”
As Eunha turned on the bed, a smile greeted her. She gently touched Jihak’s face, noticing a hint of sadness in his eyes.
“Your eyes are like jewels. Why are they so beautiful?”
“Because I’m looking at you.”
“I don’t think you’re lying. There was a time when your eyes seemed sharper than a tiger’s. But not anymore. Now, I love your eyes.”
“They’re yours.”
When he kissed her hand, she smiled faintly. He couldn’t hold her too tightly because of her belly, but his hands glided over her skin, sending shivers through her.
“Husband.”
She noticed the consistent beat of her heart. After softly kissing her lips, Jihak stood up.
Her eyes followed him.
“Where are you going?”
