Chapter 111. I Give You The Moon (14)
Translator: Aura
— It’s too late to see each other. As I mentioned before, you have to get up early…
‘Geez, she really seems to only think about work. I understand that our relationship is first and foremost professional for her, but it’s still not very pleasant.’
“Is that all you have to say?”
— Well, I’m done with the meeting report with the executive director. I also talked to the editor-in-chief of W Fashion magazine based on the meeting. Today we received a positive response from the executive director…
“Minkyung.”
Lee-Seob interrupted her. He sighed and then said,
“I thought I was back at work. Why are you still in Senior Manager mode?”
— Oh, I’m sorry…
Her voice trailed off a little, so he assumed she was tired.
“Go to sleep. Don’t think about work anymore.”
Lee-Seob took the phone away from his ear to hang up. As he was about to press the button to end the call, he heard her soft voice,
— Maybe…
He quickly put the phone back to his ear.
“Yes, tell me.”
— Are you not at home?
“Why do you ask?”
“It feels like you’re outside.”
“Yes, I’m looking at the moon.”
Minkyung was silent for a moment. For some reason, she seemed to have lost her words now that she switched modes.
“The moon is beautiful.”
— The moon?
She sounded genuinely puzzled.
“It’s so beautiful that I want to give it to you.”
There was another silence.
‘She probably has a dazed expression and her cheeks are slightly puffed out with embarrassment.’
He couldn’t help but smile at the thought of Minkyung’s face like that. When for the second time he was about to end the call to let her rest, she said,
— Give it to me.
Lee-Seob raised his head in surprise.
— I’ll come out.
“Are you serious?”
— Yes, to see the moon.
*Thump. Thump.*
He could hear his heart pounding.
“I’m here… near your building… where we said goodbye the last time.”
— Okay.
After hanging up, Lee-Seob quickly took out some mints and popped them into his mouth.
He checked the time on his phone. It felt like he had waited for ten minutes, but it hadn’t even been one.
‘Should I wait in front of her building?’
He considered it, but ultimately decided to remain at the agreed spot to be sure she would see him.
To calm his restlessness, he looked up at the sky. He took small steps back and forth as he watched the moon to find the best view.
Lee-Seob loved the moon since he was a child. He liked the moon because it quietly followed him from a distance wherever he went. Since everyone could see the moon, he used to think that there was a different moon for each person. Otherwise, it couldn’t follow only him.
That was a little secret from Lee-Seob’s childhood. Back then, Lee-Seob was fascinated by the stars that shine like jewels, the blue sky, and the clouds that looked like cotton candy.
However, science was cruel to Lee-Seob. The more he learned, the more disillusioned he became.
The moon as the only natural satellite of the earth, its craters and its far side, the optical phenomenon that causes the sky to look blue, the stars as nuclear fusion reactions…
As if to take a photo, Lee-Seob closed one eye and framed the moon between his fingers.
“Director.”
Minkyung called him after she approached noiselessly. Unlike him, she did not find science cruel. In fact, she liked it so much that she graduated from a science high school.
“Come here.”
“Huh?”
Lee-Seob pulled her in front of him without hesitation, then stretched his arms over her face. Minkyung was so close that she could almost touch his chest.
“Look carefully.”
When she looked up, he spread his legs slightly to match her height and formed a new frame with his fingers.
“Do you see the moon?”
Minkyung grabbed Lee-Seob’s wrists and adjusted the position of the frame with the same seriousness as an astronomer would observe the moon through a telescope.
“I see it.”
“The moon inside this frame is yours, Kang Minkyung.”
Minkyung didn’t say a word. She probably didn’t know what to answer. Lee-Seob, who noticed, asked her a simple question.
“Did I give you the moon?”
“Yes.”
“Isn’t it beautiful?”
“Yes.”
